Western Union Announces ATM Card Payout for Money Transfer Transactions
DENVER, Oct. 22, 2001 - Western Union Financial Services Inc., a subsidiary of First Data Corp. (NYSE: FDC) today announced the latest enhancement to its money transfer service. Customers who use Western Union's direct access platform now have the option to receive payout in the form of a Western Union ATM Card. This card can be used to obtain cash throughout the country at any of the hundreds of thousands of ATMs in the MAC and PLUS networks.
The new ATM Card payout option is the latest in a series of innovative service enhancements designed to improve the speed and ease of money transfer transactions for both customers and agents. With ATM Card payout, Western Union agents gain the ability to process and pay out money transfer transactions without having to keep large amounts of cash on hand or deplete current cash supplies. Western Union customers also benefit by gaining the ability to access their funds when and where they need them.
"As a leader in the money transfer industry, Western Union is always working on ways to improve the experience of both our customers and agents," said Mike Yerington, president, Western Union North America. "Our direct access platform allows us to take a simple money transfer transaction and make it even simpler. And, our new ATM card payout option furthers our commitment to provide Western Union customers with easy access to their funds."
The Western Union ATM Card payout option is currently available in select agent locations throughout the United States. By end of year, more than 1,500 Western Union agent locations are expected to offer Western Union's direct access platform, Western Union® Direct Connect(SM). Many of these locations will also offer the ATM Card payout option. The company expects to aggressively expand the availability of these options in the near future.
Overview of Western Union Direct Connect
Western Union introduced its Direct Connect access in 1998. The innovative service allowed the company to expand its agent base to new types of retailers, including convenience stores, drug stores and truck stops. While these retailers had long recognized the benefits of offering Western Union services, they had often been limited by lack of a dedicated customer service counter and the size of their staff. The new platform simplified the money transfer process and effectively removed the barriers that may have prevented these retailers from becoming Western Union agents. In addition, by incorporating existing money order technology, including the patented FDX-400® machine, the platform also enabled many Western Union® Money Order(SM) agents to easily expand their service offerings to include the company's money transfer services.
How the Service Works
The Direct Connect platform allows customers to send and receive money in the simplest and fastest manner possible. Customers simply pick up the Direct Connect phone at their local agent location and are immediately connected to a Western Union customer service representative. Customer service is available in more than 15 different languages, enabling the customer to conduct the money transfer transaction in his native language. The operator gathers all necessary information and provides the customer with a transaction number.
When sending funds, the customer takes the transaction number to the store clerk who collects the funds to be transferred, plus a fee, and provides a printed receipt. Receiving customers also present their transaction number to the clerk who pays the amount receivable either in cash or by check, money order -- and now by Western Union ATM card. The streamlined process greatly reduces the amount of time required to complete each transaction, freeing employees to focus on the agent's main business.

Western Union and ACI Worldwide Team Up to Provide ATM Money Transfer Service
OMAHA, Neb. and DENVER, May 17 -- ACI Worldwide (Nasdaq: TSAI), a leading international provider of enterprise e-payment solutions, and Western Union Financial Services, Inc., a subsidiary of First Data Corp.(NYSE: FDC) today announced they have agreed to add electronic money transfer capability to ACI's widely used automated teller machine (ATM) processing software. The software addition will allow ACI's customers -primarily financial institutions and ATM network owners - to provide the Western Union Money Transfer® service on their ATMs.
ACI will add the Western Union Money Transfer service to its BASE24® e-payment processing software, which will expand the availability of Western Union's ATM-based money transfer service to a broader range of ATMs and ATM networks in the U.S. ACI also will provide services to help current BASE24 users easily integrate the new functionality into their existing platforms.
BASE24 is the industry standard for fault-tolerant, scalable e-payment processing and currently powers some of the world's largest ATM and POS networks. BASE24 users in the U.S. include 53 of the top 100 financial institutions and seven of the top 10 ATM networks.
"By working with ACI to integrate our money transfer capabilities into their BASE24 platform, we will more quickly expand the availability of our services on ATMs around the country," said Mike Yerington, president of Western Union North America. "The breadth of ACI's installed customer base supports our goal of providing a wide range of alternative distribution options to complement and grow our global agent network. This will make it easy and convenient for consumers to access fast, secure and reliable money transfer services whenever and wherever they need them."
"Our 25 years of e-payments expertise is one reason Western Union selected ACI to help expand the availability of their services," said Mark Vipond, president of ACI Worldwide. "The addition of Western Union ATM Money Transfer services is just another of the many e-payment innovations we are adding to our BASE24 platform. These innovations provide our customers with new consumer services that can help them generate new revenue, as well as solidify their positions as leading-edge providers."
The Western Union ATM Money Transfer service allows a consumer to electronically send money using any participating ATM by simply swiping an ATM card and then selecting the money transfer option. The user is prompted to select a personalized code and the desired dollar amount to transfer. The ATM provides the cardholder with a receipt and confirmation number. To complete the money transfer, the sender relays the confirmation number and personalized code to the intended recipient who can retrieve the funds from any participating ATM. No bankcard is necessary to receive the funds, and because the combination of the personalized code and confirmation number is unique for every transaction, the process is designed to be safe and secure.
Unlike other person-to-person ATM-based money transfer systems that only allow for money transfers between ATMs, the Western Union ATM Money Transfer service will offer interoperability with Western Union's agent network of more that 33,000 agent locations across the U.S.
Western Union acquired the cardless ATM transaction technology to provide its money transfer services (also known as Z-Cash) through an exclusive license agreement with Plano, Texas-based EDS. EDS provides the data processing and transaction switching services to support the Western Union ATM Money Transfer Network.
